Whiteout is most definitely the winner of most beautiful cover of the ReMade series. So far. I love all of the white with what looks like trees all around the character, and the red really stands out and is pleasing to my eyeballs. I also feel like the very beginning up until the "TWENTY-FOUR HOURS EARLIER" is the strongest opening of the series so far. It's so descriptive and beautiful and I was so drawn in that I finished this episode in less than half an hour!
This episode follows May, who is dying to get some alone time. Having to deal with the ragtag group of previously-dead misfits could drive anyone crazy, and she just wants a break. When she tries to leave, the group refuses to let her go alone and Gabe ends up tagging along. While Gabe is able to walk, he's still injured, and May takes advantage of that and runs off by herself to explore. After running too far, May realizes that the strange new world she's living in is full of danger, and that danger is not contained to just the ground.
As I mentioned before, I believe that this episode has the strongest opening of them all. I was instantly hooked when the mention of "chunks of frozen water" were falling from the sky. It wasn't clear if it was snow, or hail, but the line of "It was like the heavens couldn't make up their minds and were just trying a sampler platter of everything imaginable" had me curious as to just where the group had ended up and how the climate changed so drastically so fast. They were originally in a rainy, more mild climate before they boarded the train, and after an undetermined amount of time and and now in an unknown location, they've ended up in a tundra-like area of...wherever they are. It really makes the reader think about just where the group is, whether it's Earth in the future or some other planet entirely. I also really loved the idea that wherever they are, it's incredibly unpredictable and they have to constantly learn and adapt to their surroundings. It gives off the feeling that there's more to why those kids were chosen, almost like they're being either tested or trained, and that by the end, there will be a huge reveal about why they're all together and why they were chosen.
May as a character was one of the more likable ones, which was very refreshing after reading about Inez in the last episode. In fact, this episode just confirmed my continued dislike of Inez because despite her having maybe one or two lines, she was still incredibly arrogant and still thought of herself as a leader despite not knowing anything about any members of the group. While May was a little reckless running off on her own, it was understandable as she was somewhat of a loner before she died and ended up with the group. Although, despite basically running headfirst into danger, if May had not done that and ended up hiding under the table with Gabe, they may have never made the discovery that they did at the end of the episode. So, I do believe that May's desire to be alone and explore was beneficial in the long run. May was just an all around good character and I really hope that she shows up in later episodes.
Andrea Phillips was incredible at continuing the ReMade story and this episode quickly became what is probably my new favorite. The writing is fantastic and I honestly felt like I was stuck with May in that blizzard and running with her through the forest. I was so impressed by how quickly I found myself attached to this episode and I was so satisfied with how the episode ended because I feel like the group is about to make a huge discovery. I'm so excited to see where things go from here!
